Spliced Minor Explained

Below are some notes on the standard splicing techniques that are used to generates extents of Spliced Minor, these notes only relate to the regular 147 Treble Dodging methods but the principles described also apply to Plain methods.


Lead Splices

These methods contains the same rows in a lead and can therefore be interchanged at will. The table below lists those methods which are lead-splicers (the group numbers used are my own notation).

Course Splices

These methods contains the same rows in a whole course and therefore whole courses can be interchanged at will. The table below lists those methods which are course-splicers, all methods on the same line will splice with each other in whole courses; the group numbers refer back to the lead-splicers table above.

Parker's and Relfe's Splices

These splices allow the 2nds and 6ths place variants of the same method to be rung together either as a 3-part (Parker's) or a 5-part (Relfe's) composition, but only work for methods where the pivot is either 3rds place bell (e.g. Cambridge and Primrose S) or 5ths place bell (e.g. Ipswich and Norfolk S). Three-lead Splices

For this splice three leads of one method taken from three different courses contain the same rows as the same three leads of a different method. Each of the three leads will have a fixed pair of bells in the same positions for each lead, although they may be reversed. For example, the leads commencing 153462, 154263 and 162453 of Lightfoot S contain the same rows as the same three leads of Wearmouth S; the fixed pair of bells are 5 and 6, and their positions are 2nds and 5ths place bells. The table below lists the combinations of methods where three-lead splices can be applied without changing the backwork or method group.

Six-lead Splices

For this splice six leads of one method taken from six different courses contain the same rows as the same six leads of a different method. Each of the six leads will have a fixed bell which is pivot bell for that lead. For example, the leads commencing 156342, 156423, 156234, 126543, 136524 and 146532 of Cambridge S contain the same rows as the same six leads of Beverley S; the fixed bells is 6, and its position is 3rds place bell. The table below lists the combinations of methods where six-lead splices can be applied without changing the backwork or method group.

Grid Splices

For this splice a combination of different leads from different methods are used which enable an "observation" bell to follow a path which means it rings in every different possible position, thus enabling a true extent to be achieved; the chosen grid must be applied (with the same observation bell) for every course in the extent. The grid need not necessarily form a round block, as long as the courses can be arranged into an extent. The table below shows some examples of grids, showing the method(s) to be rung every time the observation bell is the appropriate place bell:
